How to Setup the Video for this Demonstration

Special Notes about Menu and Browser Usage

General Information

This Online Help system consists of a context sensitive Image Map of this demonstration that the user can click on to see how to use the various menus. In addition, general information is included about other areas in the demonstration that may not have actual menu items associated with them (i.e., click on a temperature sensor or HP Ethernet Node to see more information about these items). Live video feedback can be viewed as part of this demonstration although it is not necessary for its operation. For more information about setting this capability up, please click on the video link here or scroll to the bottom of this view. Lastly, users of older Netscape Navigator versions (2.00) might want to view the special note section of this help file for incompatibilities with the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) implementation.

Special Notes and Considerations

Note 0: The demonstration is best viewed when the Browser is maximized (i.e., full-screen).

Note 1: Browsers using pre JDK 1.03 (Java Development Kit) Java Virtual Machines will not work. In particular, Netscape version 2.0X has been found not to work. If you have a browser that is this old, then you should upgrade to at least 3.03, as the standard JVM support is for JDK 1.03. In addition, everyone is moving towards JDK 1.1 now.

Note 2: An Operators Logon button is used to Start/Stop the control Nodes. All other operations are open to the operator. The grayed/disabled buttons are activated based on the current node or channel that the user selects. In addition, you will NOT see the live video unless you install Microsoft's NetMeeting V2.1. If you want to do this then send me email. We are also looking into multi-user methods of delivering the video to each Java Applet. But until that time, you will need NetMeeting to see the video portion of the Demonstration. It is NOT required for the demonstration however, it merely enhances the feedback. Note 3: if the Java Applet fails to connect to the NIST Server for real-time data, it will display the results of the connection in the Trace text area at the bottom of the Applet.

Video Setup Information and Guide

Currently, the operator should see a still GIF image of the Coolant Flow Meter in the lower lefthand corner of the page. If the proper software has been installed, and the user connects to the video source correctly, then they can overlay the still image area with the connected video window to view the visual effects when the valve actuates. Please note: the video interface is NOT required for the Java Applet and demonstration to function properly; it is merely an additional feedback mechanism that enhances the viewing.

In order for the user to view the Demonstration Video, they must setup, configure, and connect to the NIST Video source using Microsoft NetMeeting 2.1 software. Note: If you cannot find the MS Netmeeting Version 2.1 on the Microsoft Site, then you can obtain them here via FTP: Windows NT/95 Version 2.1.

The NIST Installation Guide for Microsoft NetMeeting 2.1 is also available here as well. Download a WinZipped version of this installation guide in the MS Word 7.0 for Windows 95 format. Important Note:The video software is for one-on-one viewing as used in personal video conferencing; this means if someone is currently connected to the video source, then it will be unavailable until that person disconnects!

Note: as better technology emerges for delivering near realtime video sequences (broadcast) to multiple Web clients at once, we will try to integrate it here. Until that time however, this style of one-to-one video delivery based on video conferencing technology will remain in place. We are experimenting with various other forms of realtime video delivery in Web space to enhance the visual feedback. Less than near realtime video is not sufficient here because of the realtime visual response needed during the valve actuation sequences.
